How to Write a Gig Post That Attracts the Best Talent

Learn to create gig posts that attract top talent, set clear expectations, and streamline hiring.
Posting Gigs

Posting a gig on Colledge is an excellent way to connect with skilled workers who can help you get the gig done. However, if your gig post is unclear or lacking key details, you may struggle to attract the right candidates. To ensure your gig stands out and brings in top talent, follow these best practices when writing your gig post.

Write a Clear and Descriptive Title

Your gig title is the first thing potential applicants will see. A vague or generic title won’t grab attention. Instead of writing “Need help with yard work,” be specific:

  • “Lawn Mowing & Hedge Trimming – 2-3 Hour gig”
  • “SAT Math Tutor Needed – Mondays 4-5 PM”

A precise title helps workers immediately understand what the gig entails.

Provide a Detailed Gig Description

The more details you include in your gig description, the easier it will be for workers to determine if they’re a good fit. A great gig post should answer the following questions:

  • What needs to be done? Describe the tasks involved.
  • How long will it take? Provide an estimated duration.
  • What skills or experience are required? Mention any special qualifications.

For example: “Seeking an experienced SAT tutor for high school math. Sessions will be in person in the Upper East Side, on Mondays from 4-5 PM. Experience with SAT prep preferred.”

Set a Competitive and Transparent Budget

If your gig pays below market rate, the best workers will skip it. Do some research on what similar gigs pay in your area and offer a competitive rate. Even if you’re flexible, providing a range will encourage more responses.

  • “Offering $50 for a two-hour gig”
  • “Pay is $20/hr, negotiable based on experience.”

Being upfront about pay builds trust and attracts serious candidates.

Specify Location and Timing

Workers need to know where and when the gig is happening. If the gig is remote, say so. If it’s in person, list the location and required dates.

  • “This gig is in downtown Austin. Need help this Saturday between 10 AM and 2 PM.”

A clear schedule helps ensure that only available applicants apply.

Mention Special Requirements Upfront

If your gig requires specific tools, experience, or certifications, state it clearly to avoid confusion later.

  • Hiring a handyman? Do they need their own tools?
  • Looking for a babysitter? Should they have CPR training or a driver’s license?
  • Need a photographer? Do they need to bring their own camera?

Being upfront about requirements saves time and ensures you find the right fit faster.

Keep It Professional and Proofread

A gig post full of typos or unclear wording can look unprofessional and discourage serious applicants. Before posting, take a moment to proofread. A polished post signals reliability and professionalism.

Respond to Applicants Promptly

Posting your gig is just the first step—be sure to check your messages regularly! If you take too long to respond, quality workers may accept other gigs before you even get a chance to chat with them. Aim to reply as soon as possible to keep the hiring process moving smoothly.

Update or Remove Your Gig Once It’s Filled

Once you’ve hired someone, don’t leave your gig post active. Mark it as filled or remove it to avoid unnecessary messages and confusion.

A well-crafted gig post is the key to attracting top talent quickly. By being clear, specific, and responsive, you’ll make the hiring process smoother and ensure you find the best person for the gig. Follow these tips, and you’ll set yourself up for success every time you post a gig on Colledge!
